Dealing with Holidays of Compromise

The Thanksgiving of Compromise is over.

Many felt lonely this week. I can only say, "Fight it."

Get out and do something kind for others, and you'll feel better.

That bit of advice is especially important since Christmas is coming up. I think this will be the first Christmas where you'll have your pick of parking spaces at the mall if you venture out.

Yes, we may be having the Christmas of Compromise too. No family and friends dropping by for holiday visits. No parties, large and small.

Write Letters

I'm always urging people to rediscover the art of writing letters. Susan Lendroth said, "To write is human, to receive a letter: Devine!”

That's how I always feel if I receive an actual letter.

Invest some time in writing letters—the old-fashioned kind with pen and paper—to those you love and won't see for whatever reason. Put your emotions, your love, your personality into a letter. You will be surprised by how grateful the recipient will be.

In this era of emails which are seldom printed and kept, letters have a special cachet. They'll be kept in a special box, perhaps bound up in ribbon too. In fact, send a beautiful box to those you love and suggest you'll write letters that can be kept in the box.

In years to come, those letters will be cherished. I believe what Emily Dickinson said is true: "A letter always seemed to me like immortality..."

Takeaway Truth

Express your love and friendship in words on real paper. The results may surprise you.
