How I'm Spending My Summer
How did this happen? Because we're in Phase 1 of home renovation and also building a workshop as an extension on the garage.
At the same time, we completed our landscaping project in the front yard.
Oh, and we now have a second home. We call it—Home Depot. Not a day goes by that we don't visit our second home at least once. Some days, we're there 2 or 3 times.
WHAT'S FUNNY ABOUT HOME REMODELING?
Absolutely nothing. Then again, every joke you ever heard about home renovation and contractors is true. You'll just groan as you laugh.
You pay contractors bundles of money, and wonder why. They start work, and then disappear. Then, two days later, one or more takes off early. The project manager disappears, and you don't see him again.
He's delegated the project to his main man who works with the crew but more or less oversees the project.
A few days later, no one shows up. You start calling to see when someone will arrive to continue work. After that, it's always a surprise when significant progress gets made.
Why? Because the project manager you hired only bids projects. He has to keep new projects in the pipeline in order to have a secure income stream. The men who do the actual work also bid projects so they'll have something lined up when they finish your job.
MY TIMEUnfortunately, my time is not my own. That book I'm trying to finish? It's not happening. Eeach day, I head to my office.
About 15 minutes later, Darling Hubby dashes into the house to ask me where I want a light fixture positioned or will I go to Home Depot and pick up some screws with "star" heads to attach OSB to studs.
Eventually, I get back to the office, but the rest of the day is much the same. I've just given up doing anything that requires a dedicated block of time longer than 15 minutes.Eventually the workshop will be finished—by mid-July I hope—and Phase 1 of reno will be completed too.
We'll breathe a sigh of relief, and I'll get back to my daily routine and get this darn book written.TAKEAWAY TRUTH
Time will pass, and we'll begin to talk about Phase 2 of our home renovation. I can only hope someone talks us out of it!
Review - NOPE - Netflix
If you're looking for something completely different in the science fiction genre, you must watch NOPE, a 2022 American film that was written, directed, and produced by Jordan Peele.
This movie, an interesting mix of science fiction and horror, stars Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yaun, Michael Wincott, Brandon Perea, and Keith David.
Now streaming on Netflix, this film will keep you guessing until you realize what's happening. It's almost like a detective story with bits and pieces of clues that end up giving a picture of what's going on.
Set in the modern west, siblings Otis—OJ Junior— (Kaluuya) and Emerald (Palmer) are horse wranglers trying to carry on their father’s tradition of training and handling horses for film productions.
But there’s something strange going on at their dry-as-a- bone California ranch.
Honestly, I don't want to say too much because the film is mesmerizing as OJ and Emerald, struggling to stay afloat, realize something way out of the ordinary is stalking their ranch.
When their father is struck dead by a small object falling from the sky, everything takes a turn for the worse.
Throw in some secondary characters with their own life crises, an electronics store camera installer, and a documentary film maker, and you have the kind of movie where you know everyone is going to end up dead.
The movie is—I don't want to say slow-paced. I'll say methodical, like when Sherlock Holmes is gathering all the evidence.NOPE was Peele’s 3rd directorial film. When asked, he said his inspirations were King Kong, 1993; Wizard of Oz, 1939; Jaws, 1975; Close Encountrs of the Third Kind, 1975; Jurassic Park, 1977; and Signs, 2002.
If you think about all of those movies, you'll realize they're all characterized by a sense of wonder and an element of dread.
Released in July 2022, NOPE was a box office succes, capturing $171.1M after a $68M budget. It has been named one of the top 10 films of 2022 by the American Film Institute and has been included in lists of the best science fiction films of the 21st century.

QUICK QUIZ - ARE YOU OVERSCHEDULED?
If you feel frazzled and frustrated, maybe you're overscheduled too. Here's a quick quiz to help you.
(5) Do you eat lunch at your desk because you can't take 20-30 minutes for a real lunch because your computer may explode from the volume of email and social media posts that are stacked up?
(6) Do you want to spend time with your hobbies or just reading a book or watching a movie with the family, but you never find the time to do any of that?
WHAT TO DO
What to do if you're overscheduled? Maybe you wrongly feel that everything is your responsibility. Maybe you need to delegate tasks or eliminate some entirely. Maybe you need to learn to say NO. Maybe you need to be more assertive.

All About Image Copyright
By possess, I mean one of these situations:
(1) you own the image,
(2) you paid the creator for the right to use the image and received permission for that use,
(3) the image was free and a license was posted saying you could use it without charge for a specific purpose.
Unless you meet those parameters, you risk everything by using an unlicensed image.
AN ASIDE TO TODAY'S SUBJECTI'd also like to tell you that if you meet the parameters for using an image and you receive an email from a supposed law firm that alleges you violated copyright by using that specific image, that you're dealing with a scammer.
These scammers use legitimate law firm names and addresses, but their email addresses never link to the legitimate law firm.COPYRIGHT ENFORCEMENT
Copyright violation has escalated with the rise of social media. As a result copyright enforcement firms are doing a booming business—especially when it comes to copyright image enforcement by firms like PicRights and its lawyers.
If you get a letter from them, it is probably legit. PicRights represents small potatoes and the big boys like the Associated Press. When they find an unauthorized image on a website, they send a letter to the website owner informing them of the copyright violation along with a demand for compensation.
You do NOT want to receive a letter like that. If you don't resolve the issue by paying a fee that is usually 4 figures, their lawyers follow up.I've got to admit, I wish there were a copyright enforcement firm for authors because my books have been pirated all over the planet! What recourse do independent authors have? Sigh. Not much.
MAKE YOUR WEBSITE, BLOG, NL, MARKETING BULLETPROOF
Always get permission from the copyright owner before using any image unless the image is in public domain or it comes with a clear notice of permission. This is true for so-called "free" stock images too.
A website that offers free images always has a Content License posted. For instance on Pixabay, in the top right of a download page, you'll see this: "Free for use under the Pixabay Content License" and the link takes you to a page that tells you what you can do with the image and what you can NOT do with it.
TAKEAWAY TRUTH
Protect yourself and make sure you know what to do before posting an image.
Take Me Away to a Beach
I feel as if I need a vacation, but I just returned a few days ago from one!
I've spent most of the week catching up on, but I'm still not up to date.
Sigh.
Wish I could slip away to a quiet, calm beach, but that's not going to happen.
So...I look at pictures of beaches. LOL.
TAKEAWAY TRUTH
Love this beacy quotation by some Unknown beach lover. If you take a beach vacation this summer, leave a comment and tell me about it.
Review - Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning - Netflix
After all, Mr. Cruise is now officially a senior citizen, but 63 isn't as old as it used to be. Ask any of the people I know who are that age or way beyond.
I'm thinking there may be another IMF movie or movies in his future where he must come back to the IMF to do something only Ethan Hunt can do. What do you think?
Anyway, I gave the movie a look and found it to be rather standard IMF fare with a “today” plot revolving around artificial intelligence that is seemingly unstoppable.
Directed by Christopher Mcuarrie and written by McQuarrie and Erik Jendresen, the move was produced by McQuarrie and Cruise.
Along with Cruise, the movie stars Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny, Anglea Bassett, and Esai Morales. This flick was touted as the climax of the franchise and ended upbeing one of the most expensive movies ever made. The budget came in at $300-400M. Generally, the movie pleased critics and audiences.
I'll admit I'm not the target audience for this film because I thought it was pretty standard fare. I see the target audience for this as comparable to those readers who enjoy "comfort reads." This is easily a "go-to" flick for those wanting an action film without a complicated plot, with charismatic actors, and with a predictable outcome.
TAKEAWAY TRUTH
If you're looking for something entertaining to watch on a lazy Saturday evening, you could do worse so watch the "last" IMF film.
Think As You Wake
In Darling Hubby's Happy Friday post, I read this quote and liked it so much that I'm sharing it here with you.
These wise words came from the Dalai Lama. I'm sorry. I don't know which incarnation of the Dalai Lama said it.
In case you don't know exactly who the Dalai Lama is, he is the highest spiritual leader and head of Tibetan Buddhism. The current Dalai Lama is the 14th, and he is 90 years old.
The Dalai Lama served as the resident spiritual and temporal leader of Tibet before 1959.
After that year, he led the Tibetan government in exile as represented by the Central Tibetan Administration in Dharamsala, India.
Now you know who he is so let me share what he said.
"Every day, think as you wake up, today I am fortunate to be alive, I have a precious human life, I am not going to waste it. I am going to use all my energies to develop myself, to expand my heart out to others; to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all beings. I am going to have kind thoughts towardsSaturday Share - Recipe - Blueberry Syrup
The pancakes were always light and fluffy and were served with a choice of syrups. My favorite was Blueberry Syrup. Butter melting on a short stack with blueberry syrup running down the sides of the golden brown pancakes.
Yummy delicious.
Today, I have the recipe for making Blueberry Syrup. It's super easy and takes only 4 ingredients. Why not make some today and have pancakes for Sunday breakfast?
BLUEBERRY SYRUP
Ingredients
- 16 ounces of frozen blueberries, thawed, or 1 16-ounce can
- 1/2 cup of pure maple syrup
- 1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
- pinch of salt
10 Ways NOT to Succeed
I've been trying to write this book since the beginning of the year.
Trying to write a book is vastly different from writing a book.
To quote that famous philospher: "Do or do not. There is no try." —Yoda
With a new month started, I was so disgusted with so little progress that I read a post I wrote many years ago. I needed that reminder of certain truths I know. but am consistently ignoring.
Reading it helped me so maybe it will help you if you have a project that you just can't seem to bring to completion. Just substitute the name of your project where I call it Book and Writing.

1. Wait until everything in your life is perfect before starting.
2. If started, wait each day until all the other nitpicky things of daily life have been done before you tackle your writing.
3. Write only when you feel like it rather than establishing a weekly quota of pages or words produced.
4. Write and rewrite the first chapter, not moving ahead until you have the beginning done to perfection.
6. Wallow in indecision about the story, the genre, the marketability, the cover—even after you've had a dozen created—rather than moving forward because that's so much easier than facing the blank page each day.
7. Take on a volunteer project that benefits all of your friends because you feel it must be done as soon as possible rather than procrastinating on it to write a book which is such hard work.
8. Take on another volunteer project because you finished the previous one.9. Realize that you have 2 trips coming up so you know you won't get the book finished before then so set it aside to get your hair done, a mani-pedi, and new shorts and tops or whatever you think must be done now, now, now.
10. When you think about your work in progress, you get depressed so stop thinking about it. Watch some captivating documentary on TV when the itch to write makes you uncomfortable.Depressing? You betcha. Fortunately, you'll eventually come to your senses and start saying NO to anything that isn't writing the book. You'll go to your office, give yourself a stern lecture, and start writing.

Thomas Carlyle said, "Our main business is NOT to see what lies dimly at a distance, but to do what lies clearly at hand." That means FOCUS on what you set out to do, and get it done. That's what I'm doing now. I'm writing, NOT trying to write.

If you read my post about the first book, Pieces of Blue, you'll be familiar with her series. I asked Liz to tell me about her new book, PATCHES OF RED. It's Book 2 in her series, Colors, the Harper Loch Trilogy.
LIZ SAID...When I started writing Patches of Red, Book 2 in Colors, the Harper Loch Trilogy, the Lovin’ Spoonful song, Darling Be Home Soon came into my mind for the first time in … oh, a really long time, and made itself right at home. Every day for I’m not sure how long, the tune slipped into my consciousness.
This isn’t a complete surprise. The Lovin’ Spoonful’s music was an important and much loved part of my late teenage years and lead singer John Sebastion is still one of the greater unrequited crushes of my life.
What is a complete surprise is how much music affects my writing, how the melody and the lyrics will tumble between lines and make suggestions not of their use, but of the emotions they share. The way they soften sharp edges, and ease the tension in the back of my neck when I find myself deleting more words than I’ve added. What makes it surprising is that I can’t write at all while music’s playing or the TV’s on. I lost that ability when the last kid left for college and the nest grew empty and quiet.
But, oh, the songs. The Spoonful’s breakout hit was Do You Believe in Magic? I don’t think I did—believe in it, I mean—when the song came out, but I learned to as I grew older. When sharp, shattered pieces of life somehow came together to create smooth mosaics of knowledge gained and achievement earned and love winning. The things romance novels are made of. I seldom write straight romance anymore, but my women’s fiction titles contain love stories that bring their couples home, finding magic along the way, and creating their own mosaics and melodies. I am thankful for the stories and for the songs. And, maybe a little, for that unrequited crush on John Sebastian.ABOUT PATCHES OF RED

Peace, Quiet, Soul Nourishment
The next couple of weeks are vacation weeks for us.
We went to Louisiana for a few days for my annual summer siblings reunion.
My older brother lives on a farm in Louisiana so Darling Hubby and I drove to his home. My younger brother and his wife drove from Colorado with their RV in tow.
It's great to get together with them plus my nephews and their kids.
Mornings at the farm are glorious. No traffic noise. No sounds except for the birds singing in the the giant magnolia tree and in the elms and oaks and the rustle of foliage as the morning breeze brushes across the the soybeans and corn planted in the fields. Clouds obscure the sun, and a little mist hovers above the crops. The air is clean and pure.
The peace and quiet is stunning. Wonderful.
TAKEAWAY TRUTH
It nourishes my soul.
Review - Unfamiliar on Netflix
The great thing about streaming services is you can not only see it with English sub-titles, you can also select to watch with English Audio turned on.
Unfamiliar is a spy thriller with a convoluted plot that will keep you guessing all the way through. It's a 6-episode German thriller involving 2 former government agents, Meret and Simon, who run a secret safe house in Berlin.
A deadly threat from their past resurfaces on their daughter's birthday, and they end up running for their lives from assassins, the BND (German Intelligence Agency), and Russian agents.
The series is addictive, and the ending makes you scream for more. Unfortunately, Netflix has not renewed the series yet, but a second season may happen since the show performed well globally.
If it is renewed, a second season would probably be released in early 2027.
TAKEAWAY TRUTH
Watch Unfamiliar, and if you like it, be sure and give it a thumbs up. Viewership determines the future of any streaming series.
