Review - French Lover - Netflix

Don't be dismayed, but today's movie review is for a French romantic comedy starring Omar Sy as Abel, a dashing but jaded movie star, and Sara Giraudeau as Marion, a down on her luck waitress in a divorce battle with her ex who doesn't watch action movies and doesn't know who Abel is.

I saw a trailer for this Netflix movie and was intrigued. Since most foreign movies one can stream have English audio tracks embedded, it's not nearly as distracting as reading subtitles.

I found the movie to be funny and well-acted. I also found it intriguing to see a romcom aimed at a mostly French audience.

Some of the funny parts tickled my funny bone because they weren't what one normally would see or hear in an American romcom.

Except for Omar Sy, whom I'd seen in another French movie as well as several American films, I wasn't familiar with the cast which I found to be superb. This French romcom had pretty much the same kind of supporting actors as an American romcom featuring a movie star hero: a cutthroat sister, a slightly weird brother-in-law, starstruck mother and father, etc.

There were a few anachronistic bits, i.e., mentioning Jimmy Hoffa in what was supposed to be funny dialogue. In this country, there's an entire generation who wouldn't get that reference. The English translator for the audio track should have known better.

Those English translated bits provided a different kind of amusement, but that didn't take away from the film.

TAKEAWAY TRUTH

All in all, I found the film amusing and entertaining. From an author's perspective, I found it educational as to what the French would find amusing in a romantic comedy. If you have Netflix, watch it. You may find you like it too.

Author Advice - Why Write Every Day

Writing success is built one day at a time.

A universal truth is: "If you want to be a writer, then write."

To be a "professional" writer, one must write. Not once in a while, but every day. If not every day, then on some kind of consistent basis.

 Why?

Two reasons.

(1) It builds the habit of producing words on a consistent basis. If you write 2,000 words each day, Monday through Friday, it's easy to sit down on Monday and do that.

It's not so easy if there are many days since the last time you wrote. You end up wasting time trying to motivate yourself to write.

(2) A novel is a massive cluster of ideas. If you write every day, you have the universe of the story in your head. You don't waste time looking at notes to refresh your memory.

TAKEAWAY TRUTH

Here's another universal truth about writing. Writers write. Those who want to write, but don't, make excuses.

Saturday Share - Great Dip for 4th of July

Happy Independence Day!

If the weather is good, and not so hot that it cooks your skin, you'll probably be outside grilling chicken, smoking brisket, or doing both along with sausage on the grill and cold drinks in the cooler.

The kids may be outside if you can get them away from video games and their phones to play touch football, toss a softball, or maybe a game of hide and seek if they're still young.

What better way to celebrate this holiday than a recipe that reflects the melting pot we proudly are in this country.

I give you my recipe that will make any party great and will serve as an appetizer to keep hunger at bay until you toss that delicious BBQ on a platter.

OLD FASHIONED TEX MEX DIP

Ingredients

  • 1 16-ounce can of refried beans
  • 1 4-ounce can of chopped green chiles
  • 1 4.5-ounce can pitted black olives, chopped
  • 3 medium green onions, finely chopped
  • 1 cup of sour cream
  • 1 package guacamole mix, any brand that you like
  • 1 medium tomato, diced
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated
  • 1 large avocado, pitted and mashed
  • 1/2 cup Picante Sauce, of course, my choice is always Pace's
  • Tortilla chips
Directions
  1. Mash the avocado and combine with the guacamole mix. Refrigerate at least an hour until it's "set" up.
  2. Prepare the rest of the ingredients while you wait. Drain and chop the green chiles. Chop the black olives, green oinions, and tomato. Combine the olives and green onions in a small bowl and mix the tomatoes and chiles in another bowl.
  3. Shred the cheese.
  4. When the guacamole is ready, remove it from the fridge. In a large shallow dish, layer the ingredients in this order: beans, guacamole, olives and green onions mixture, chiles and tomato mixture.
  5. Finally, sprinkle the cheese over the mixture.
  6. Using the sour cream, frost the mixture. Next, drizzle the picante sauce over the layered dip.
  7. Serve with fresh tortilla chips.
  8. Here's a little tip. Warm the tortilla chips. It makes the dip even better.

Difference Between Art and Craft of Writing

What is the difference between the Art of Writing and the Craft of Writing?

THE ART OF WRITING

What is this? It's the creative process of translating emotions, abstract thoughts, and ideas into words that convey meaning to the reader and helps the reader connect with the written text.

I think this could conceivably be viewed in part as the author's voice. How one author conveys an idea is different from other authors. Maybe that certain something some authors seem born with that enables them to easily master the art of writing is akin to being born with artistic talent.

THE CRAFT OF WRITING

This is much easier to define. It's the grammar rules of punctuation, spelling, choosing the correct word, sentence structure, plotting, scene development, dialogue, characterization, and mastering the narrative elements of writing, just to name a few, in order to properly create text that connects with your readers.

Good writing requires both Art and Craft. Learn your Craft and then use what you learned to write 1000s upon 1000s of words. Why? Because Craft can be learned from outside oneself, but Art can only be learned within by writing.

TAKEAWAY TRUTH

Want to be a great writer? Learn everything you can and then write, write, write.

NO POWER & CENTERPOINT'S AI CUSTOMER SERVICE

July began yesterday with the thermometer on our garage hitting 100° F. I think there was also 100% humidity.

This was the week that the power company began replacing underground power lines in our section of town. What fun this has been!

Since Monday, the power goes off at unexpected times. Usually this happens when I'm frantically typing away, trying to get the words done before I lose the thought.

When does the power return? I guess whenever the heck Centerpoint decides it's time. We're on the text message list for Centerpoint. When they first starting this text alert system, they would actually send texts saying, "We see that the power is off at or near your address." Another text would follow saying why it was off, i.e. "damage to the lines is being repaired."

A while after that, we'd get a text saying, "Power is estimated to be restore by 4:00PM today."

AI OLIVIA

Now, we get no text alerts when the power goes out. We call Centerpoint and get OLIVIA, the AI in charge of customer service who asks why we're calling and gives a list of reasons.

We select Power Outage. Olivia thinks and then tells us she sees that the power is out at our address. Then she asks if we are on their text alert system.

We answer yes. Then she asks if we received a text alert. We answer no. Then the all-knowing Olivia tells us we should manage our text alert settings at Centerpoint dot blah blah blah—which we've done countless times only to discover each time that the proper settings are still in place.

No explanation of why the power is out. No information, estimate, or guess about when power will be restored. Nothing but generic drivel by an AI named Olivia.

The first day the power was off almost 8 hours. We had an electrician working here on our construction. Of course, no power means no power tools.

I went outside to report what I'd learned from Centerpoint aka AI OLIVIA.

As an electrician, I'm sure he has had more interaction with Olivia than I have because he said, "I hate that AI BITCH."

TAKEAWAY TRUTH

Laughing, I agreed. I hate that AI BITCH too.

Review - Voicemails For Isabellle - Netflix

What can I say about VOICEMAILS FOR ISABELLE, now streaming on Netflix? Well, grab a box of Kleenex before you sit down to watch the film.

(I apologize for the typo in the Post Title.)

This 2026 American movie, billed as a romantic comedy drama, is sweet and heartwarming with a touch of heat, but there are scenes that will make you weep.

Written and directed by Leah McKendrick, the movie stars Zoey Deutch, Nick Robinson, Harry Shum Jr., Lukas Gage, and Nick Offerman.

BLURBING THE FLICK

Jill copes with the tragic death of her sister Isabelle by leaving voicemails on Isabelle's phone number. The only problem is that  Isabelle's phone number was reassigned to Wes, an upwardly mobile young man who finds Jill's voicemails hilarious. As time passes, Wes begins to fall in love with Jill.

Truly, the movie is delightful. It was funny and poignant and romantic. What more can you ask for in a contemporary romantic comedy, or dramedy, if you prefer?

TAKEAWAY TRUTH

The ending of the movie is exactly what the viewer wants. Definitely watch this film if you're a Netflix subscriber.

How I'm Spending My Summer

Maybe you knew, but I didn't realize that the last post I made on SlingWords was 11 days ago.

How did this happen? Because we're in Phase 1 of home renovation and also building a workshop as an extension on the garage.

At the same time, we completed our landscaping project in the front yard.

Oh, and we now have a second home. We call it—Home Depot. Not a day goes by that we don't visit our second home at least once. Some days, we're there 2 or 3 times.

WHAT'S FUNNY ABOUT HOME REMODELING?

Absolutely nothing. Then again, every joke you ever heard about home renovation and contractors is true. You'll just groan as you laugh.

You pay contractors bundles of money, and wonder why. They start work, and then disappear.

To be fair, I do understand their process. They bid a job, schedule a team to show up, and they do. You're thrilled that soon your project will be completed.

Then, two days later, one or more takes off early. The project manager disappears, and you don't see him again.

He's delegated the project to his main man who works with the crew but more or less oversees the project.

A few days later, no one shows up. You start calling to see when someone will arrive to continue work. After that, it's always a surprise when significant progress gets made.

Why? Because the project manager you hired only bids projects. He has to keep new projects in the pipeline in order to have a secure income stream.

The men who do the actual work also bid projects so they'll have something lined up when they finish your job.

MY TIME

Unfortunately, my time is not my own. That book I'm trying to finish? It's not happening. Eeach day, I head to my office.

About 15 minutes later, Darling Hubby dashes into the house to ask me where I want a light fixture positioned or will I go to Home Depot and pick up some screws with "star" heads to attach OSB to studs.

Eventually, I get back to the office, but the rest of the day is much the same. I've just given up doing anything that requires a dedicated block of time longer than 15 minutes.

Eventually the workshop will be finished—by mid-July I hope—and Phase 1 of reno will be completed too.

We'll breathe a sigh of relief, and I'll get back to my daily routine and get this darn book written.

Time will pass, and we'll forget all the disccomfort and frustration we endured.

TAKEAWAY TRUTH

Time will pass, and we'll  begin to talk about Phase 2 of our home renovation. I can only hope someone talks us out of it!

Do you love to read? I do. Reading a book has saved my sanity during this reno. I'm happy to invite you to sign up for my free newsletter, I LOVE READING. You'll receive exclusive content, news about book bargains, and new release notices. SIGN UP TODAY.

Review - NOPE - Netflix

If you're looking for something completely different in the science fiction genre, you must watch NOPE, a 2022 American film that was written, directed, and produced by Jordan Peele.

This movie, an interesting mix of science fiction and horror, stars Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yaun, Michael Wincott, Brandon Perea, and Keith David.

Now streaming on Netflix, this film will keep you guessing until you realize what's happening. It's almost like a detective story with bits and pieces of clues that end up giving a picture of what's going on.

Set in the modern west, siblings Otis—OJ Junior— (Kaluuya) and Emerald (Palmer) are horse wranglers trying to carry on their father’s tradition of training and handling horses for film productions.

But there’s something strange going on at their dry-as-a- bone California ranch.

Honestly, I don't want to say too much because the film is mesmerizing as OJ and Emerald, struggling to stay afloat, realize something way out of the ordinary is stalking their ranch.

When their father is struck dead by a small object falling from the sky, everything takes a turn for the worse.

Throw in some secondary characters with their own life crises, an electronics store camera installer, and a documentary film maker, and you have the kind of movie where you know everyone is going to end up dead.

The movie is—I don't want to say slow-paced. I'll say methodical, like when Sherlock Holmes is gathering all the evidence.

It’s subtle, but it will grab you and make you keep watching to find out what the heck is going on. You have to pay attention to understand what’s actually happening.

NOPE was Peele’s 3rd directorial film. When asked, he said his inspirations were King Kong, 1993; Wizard of Oz, 1939; Jaws, 1975; Close Encountrs of the Third Kind, 1975; Jurassic Park, 1977; and Signs, 2002.

If you think about all of those movies, you'll realize they're all characterized by a sense of wonder and an element of dread.

Released in July 2022, NOPE was a box office succes, capturing $171.1M after a $68M budget. It has been named one of the top 10 films of 2022 by the American Film Institute and has been included in lists of the best science fiction films of the 21st century.

QUICK QUIZ - ARE YOU OVERSCHEDULED?

Summer is here—I love summer! Yet, I feel tired and frazzled because I can't spend the day outside in my garden.

Why? I asked myself that question. I answered the question too. I'm overscheduled.

If you feel frazzled and frustrated, maybe you're overscheduled too. Here's a quick quiz to help you.

If you can answer YES to 5 of these questions, you need to take a step back and change something in your life or your daily schedule.

(1) Do you frequently forget to do something you said you'd do?

(2) When you wake in the morning, do you dread getting out of bed because of all the tasks facing you?

(3) Do you skip breakfast because you need to tackle your projects right away?

(4) Do you feel pressed for time so you skim emails or save them for later rather reading and responding immediately?

(5) Do you eat lunch at your desk because you can't take 20-30 minutes for a real lunch because your computer may explode from the volume of email and social media posts that are stacked up?

(6) Do you want to spend time with your hobbies or just reading a book or watching a movie with the family, but you never find the time to do any of that?

(7) Do you feel discouraged as you're trying to fall asleep at night because you didn't accomplish enough even though you worked from sunrise to sunset?

WHAT TO DO

What to do if you're overscheduled? Maybe you wrongly feel that everything is your responsibility. Maybe you need to delegate tasks or eliminate some entirely. Maybe you need to learn to say NO. Maybe you need to be more assertive.

I don't have the answer to your overscheduling problem, but I bet you do. Most of us know what we should do to clear out a clutter-filled day, but we don't do it.

Tackle the really important tasks in your world, and do the best you can. At the end of the day, leave all of that behind and enjoy your personal life.

It's easy to get caught up and feel you have to do it all, but there is something very important to remember.

Despite all the propaganda to the contrary, no one can do it all.

Do the best you you and make a plan to deal with the rest. More importantly, make a plan to free up enough time to have a real life.

TAKEAWAY TRUTH

Your personal life should be enjoyed, and your personal time should be protected. Personal relationships and fun nourish the soul and warm the heart.

Saturday Share Recipe - Pecan Cookies

Are you enjoying your weekend? I am. So is Darling Hubby because I'm making cookies today.

The recipe I'm sharing is an old one from my Mom's collection. It's simple to make and only calls for 5 ingredients. It's a great cookie to have with a cup of coffee.

PECAN COOKIES

Ingredients

  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon plain bread crumbs
  • 2 cups finely chopped pecans

Instructions

Lightly grease a baking sheet or cover it with parchment paper then preheat oven to 300°F. (145°C).

In a mixing bowl, cream together the eggs, sugar, and vanilla. Add the bread crumbs and nuts and combine well.

Drop by teaspoons onto the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes. Makes 3 dozen.

TAKEAWAY TRUTH

You'll notice there is no fat in these so the cookie is a small, crispy bit of goodness.

All About Image Copyright

If you publish images online, you probably know that you must possess the RIGHT to use an image in the way you used it.

By possess, I mean one of these situations:

(1) you own the image,

(2) you paid the creator for the right to use the image and received permission for that use,

(3) the image was free and a license was posted saying you could use it without charge for a specific purpose.

Unless you meet those parameters, you risk everything by using an unlicensed image.

AN ASIDE TO TODAY'S SUBJECT

I'd also like to tell you that if you meet the parameters for using an image and you receive an email from a supposed law firm that alleges you violated copyright by using that specific image, that you're dealing with a scammer.

These scammers use legitimate law firm names and addresses, but their email addresses never link to the legitimate law firm.

The email may sound similar, but it's not the same you'll discover if you do some basic research on the law firm and the usual form their email addresses take.

COPYRIGHT ENFORCEMENT

Copyright violation has escalated with the rise of social media. As a result copyright enforcement firms are doing a booming business—especially when it comes to copyright image enforcement by firms like PicRights and its lawyers.

If you get a letter from them, it is probably legit. PicRights represents small potatoes and the big boys like the Associated Press. When they find an unauthorized image on a website, they send a letter to the website owner informing them of the copyright violation along with a demand for compensation.

You do NOT want to receive a letter like that. If you don't resolve the issue by paying a fee that is usually 4 figures, their lawyers follow up.

If you still do not respond promptly, you'll receive a demand letter from the lawyers. The ante goes up, and the end result is that you'll pay a little or a whole lot.

I've got to admit, I wish there were a copyright enforcement firm for authors because my books have been pirated all over the planet! What recourse do independent authors have? Sigh. Not much.

MAKE YOUR WEBSITE, BLOG, NL, MARKETING BULLETPROOF

Always get permission from the copyright owner before using any image unless the image is in public domain or it comes with a clear notice of permission. This is true for so-called "free" stock images too.

A website that offers free images always has a Content License posted. For instance on Pixabay, in the top right of a download page, you'll see this: "Free for use under the Pixabay Content License" and the link takes you to a page that tells you what you can do with the image and what you can NOT do with it.

TAKEAWAY TRUTH

Protect yourself and make sure you know what to do before posting an image.

Take Me Away to a Beach

I feel as if I need a vacation, but I just returned a few days ago from one!

I've spent most of the week catching up on, but I'm still not up to date.

Sigh.

Wish I could slip away to a quiet, calm beach, but that's not going to happen.

So...I look at pictures of beaches. LOL.

TAKEAWAY TRUTH

Love this beacy quotation by some Unknown beach lover. If you take a beach vacation this summer, leave a comment and tell me about it.

Review - Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning - Netflix

I’m probably the last person on the planet to see the final part of the last Mission Impossible movie starring Tom Cruise. I guess it’s the last.

After all, Mr. Cruise is now officially a senior citizen, but 63 isn't as old as it used to be. Ask any of the people I know who are that age or way beyond.

I'm thinking there may be another IMF movie or movies in his future where he must come back to the IMF to do something  only Ethan Hunt can do. What do you think?

Anyway, I gave the movie a look and found it to be rather standard IMF fare with a “today” plot revolving around artificial intelligence that is seemingly unstoppable.

Directed by Christopher Mcuarrie and written by McQuarrie and Erik Jendresen, the move was produced by McQuarrie and Cruise.

Along with Cruise, the movie stars Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny, Anglea Bassett, and Esai Morales. This flick was touted as the climax of the franchise and ended upbeing one of the most expensive movies ever made. The budget came in at $300-400M. Generally, the movie pleased critics and audiences.

I'll admit I'm not the target audience for this film because I thought it was pretty standard fare. I see the target audience for this as comparable to those readers who enjoy "comfort reads." This is easily a "go-to" flick for those wanting an action film without a complicated plot, with charismatic actors, and with a predictable outcome.

TAKEAWAY TRUTH

If you're looking for something entertaining  to watch on a lazy Saturday evening, you could do worse so watch the "last" IMF film.

Think As You Wake

In Darling Hubby's Happy Friday post, I read this quote and liked it so much that I'm sharing it here with you.

These wise words came from the Dalai Lama. I'm sorry. I don't know which incarnation of the Dalai Lama said it.

In case you don't know exactly who the Dalai Lama is, he is the highest spiritual leader and head of Tibetan Buddhism. The current Dalai Lama is the 14th, and he is 90 years old.

The Dalai Lama served as the resident spiritual and temporal leader of Tibet before 1959.

After that year, he led the Tibetan government in exile as represented by the Central Tibetan Administration in Dharamsala, India.

Now you know who he is so let me share what he said.

"Every day, think as you wake up, today I am fortunate to be alive, I have a precious human life, I am not going to waste it. I am going to use all my energies to develop myself, to expand my heart out to others; to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all beings. I am going to have kind thoughts towards
others, I am not going to get angry or think badly about others. I am going to benefit others as much as I can."

I'd like to take that apart and present each thought separtely and put a personal emphasis on his words.

As you wake up each day, think these thoughts.

I am fortunate to be alive.

I AM a precious human life.

I am not going to waste my life.

I am going to use all my energies to develop myself.

I am going to use all my energies to expand my heart out to other.

I am going to use all my energies to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all beings.

I am going to have kind thoughts toward others.

I am not going to get angry at other people or think badly of them.

I am going to benefit others as much as I can.

TAKEAWAY TRUTH

Those are wise words that I hope you take to heart. They're another way of saying, "Be a blessing to others." Have a lovely Sunday.

Saturday Share - Recipe - Blueberry Syrup

When you were a kid, did your parents take you to Denny's or IHop or one of the other diners famous for serving breakfast?

The pancakes were always light and fluffy and were served with a choice of syrups. My favorite was Blueberry Syrup. Butter melting on a short stack with blueberry syrup running down the sides of the golden brown pancakes.

Yummy delicious.

Today, I have the recipe for making Blueberry Syrup. It's super easy and takes only 4 ingredients. Why not make some today and have pancakes for Sunday breakfast?

BLUEBERRY SYRUP

 Ingredients

  • 16 ounces of frozen blueberries, thawed, or 1 16-ounce can
  • 1/2 cup of pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
  • pinch of salt
Directions

1. Into a blender jar, place all the ingredients.
2. Using the liquefy setting, blend for 30 seconds.
3. Pour into a saucepan and bring to a boil.
4. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring to keep it from scorching and sticking.
5. Serve immediately or pour into a container and store in the fridge. Before serving, simply microwave to warm the syrup.
6. Makes 2 cups. You shouldn't have any seeds after liquefying, but if you do, strain the syrup.

TAKEAWAY TRUTH

I'll confess that sometimes after a very busy day, I'll make pancakes for dinner because they're a crowd-pleaser.

10 Ways NOT to Succeed

I've been trying to write this book since the beginning of the year.

Trying to write a book is vastly different from writing a book.

To quote that famous philospher: "Do or do not. There is no try." —Yoda

With a new month started, I was so disgusted with so little progress that I read a post I wrote many years ago. I needed that reminder of certain truths I know. but am consistently ignoring.

Reading it helped me so maybe it will help you if you have a project that you just can't seem to bring to completion. Just substitute the name of your project where I call it Book and Writing.

Peck,peck,peck.
10 WAYS NOT TO SUCCEED

1. Wait until everything in your life is perfect before starting.

2. If started, wait each day until all the other nitpicky things of daily life have been done before you tackle your writing.

3. Write only when you feel like it rather than establishing a weekly quota of pages or words produced.

4. Write and rewrite the first chapter, not moving ahead until you have the beginning done to perfection.

5. Find a way to procrastinate. For instance, when you finally get to a new chapter, decide it's time to design the cover art. Get lost in that project and drown in indecision until the month is over. Then go back to the manuscript at which point you've lost your enthusiasm for the project.

6. Wallow in indecision about the story, the genre, the marketability, the cover—even after you've had a dozen created—rather than moving forward because that's so much easier than facing the blank page each day.

7. Take on a volunteer project that benefits all of your friends because you feel it must be done as soon as possible rather than procrastinating on it to write a book which is such hard work.

8. Take on another volunteer project because you finished the previous one.

9. Realize that you have 2 trips coming up so you know you won't get the book finished before then so set it aside to get your hair done, a mani-pedi, and new shorts and tops or whatever you think must be done now, now, now.

10. When you think about your work in progress, you get depressed so stop thinking about it. Watch some captivating documentary on TV when the itch to write makes you uncomfortable.

Depressing? You betcha. Fortunately, you'll eventually come to your senses and start saying NO to anything that isn't writing the book. You'll go to your office, give yourself a stern lecture, and start writing.

TAKEAWY TRUTH

Thomas Carlyle said, "Our main business is NOT to see what lies dimly at a distance, but to do what lies clearly at hand." That means FOCUS on what you set out to do, and get it done. That's what I'm doing now. I'm writing, NOT trying to write.

If you read my post about the first book, Pieces of Blue, you'll be familiar with her series. I asked Liz to tell me about her new book, PATCHES OF RED. It's Book 2 in her series, Colors, the Harper Loch Trilogy.

LIZ SAID...

When I started writing Patches of Red, Book 2 in Colors, the Harper Loch Trilogy, the Lovin’ Spoonful song, Darling Be Home Soon came into my mind for the first time in … oh, a really long time, and made itself right at home. Every day for I’m not sure how long, the tune slipped into my consciousness.

This isn’t a complete surprise. The Lovin’ Spoonful’s music was an important and much loved part of my late teenage years and lead singer John Sebastion is still one of the greater unrequited crushes of my life.

What is a complete surprise is how much music affects my writing, how the melody and the lyrics will tumble between lines and make suggestions not of their use, but of the emotions they share. The way they soften sharp edges, and ease the tension in the back of my neck when I find myself deleting more words than I’ve added. What makes it surprising is that I can’t write at all while music’s playing or the TV’s on. I lost that ability when the last kid left for college and the nest grew empty and quiet.

But, oh, the songs. The Spoonful’s breakout hit was Do You Believe in Magic? I don’t think I did—believe in it, I mean—when the song came out, but I learned to as I grew older. When sharp, shattered pieces of life somehow came together to create smooth mosaics of knowledge gained and achievement earned and love winning. The things romance novels are made of.

I seldom write straight romance anymore, but my women’s fiction titles contain love stories that bring their couples home, finding magic along the way, and creating their own mosaics and melodies. I am thankful for the stories and for the songs. And, maybe a little, for that unrequited crush on John Sebastian.

ABOUT PATCHES OF RED

He’s handsome but couldn’t even remember her name.

She’s pretty, but her finickiness drives him crazy. And yet …

After twenty years as a nurse practitioner in the same practice, Ellie Wentz gives notice. When office politics interferes with her job, it’s time to get a new one. When her son and daughter-in-law buy her house and she has sold and given away everything else that’s not attached to her heartstrings, she packs up what remains and goes to Harper Loch to spend time with her best friend. She’ll decide what to do and where to go from there. No matter how much the handsome friend of her friends annoys her.

Jesse Grant comes to Harper Loch to help out his niece for a few weeks. He’s retired from the navy, his boys are grown, and he’s at loose ends. But he really likes the little lake community in Michigan—he thinks he might stay. Long widowed, he has no interest in getting married again, and neither does the redhead he can’t seem to avoid. And yet … again.

BONUS: EXCERPT FROM PATCHES OF RED

He drew in a deep breath, absorbing the combination of smells she was noticing. “I like this time of year.”

He was surprised that he still did. There were rough days, like this one, times when Grace’s suffering in memory came close to breaking him as certainly as it had in real time.

“Oh, me, too. I even like winter, although I’m not so sure I’ll be crazy about it when it snows. How will I get to the shop?”

“Sam says the Crossleys plow snow in the driveways and on Enoch Trace around the lake. I’m not sure about getting to the highway on Harper Loch Road, though. That could be iffy.” He couldn’t find it in himself to worry about something that hadn’t happened yet—he was having enough trouble not worrying about what already had. “You’ve got a while to think about it, I think.” He could hear the edge in his own voice.

“I’m not really concerned.” She was silent, but not for long. “I just talk sometimes without thinking it might be annoying. I believe that’s where we are tonight, isn’t it?”

He didn’t know how to answer that. She was right. Although he liked her being there with him, he didn’t want to talk. He didn’t want her to talk. But how did he explain that without sounding like a total horse’s behind?

“Maybe,” he said, without looking at her, and they rode on in silence.

When they’d started the ride, he’d intended to go back and check on the progress of the pumpkin patch, look at the Christmas trees, and make scary jokes about things hiding in the cornfield, but he didn’t do any of those things. He just turned the Mule around at the wide spot created by the other lane crossing the one beside the ditch.

“It’s a bad day,” he said finally, when they were on Enoch Trace heading toward her cottage. “Grace passed sixteen years ago today, after the longest, hardest week I’ve ever known. I didn’t want to be alone, but it would have been better if I was. I’m not good to be around.” He couldn’t make himself apologize—it would be like saying he was sorry he’d loved someone so much that remembering her death was like an open wound.

Ellie nodded, not breaking her silence. She laid her hand on his on the steering wheel, and when she went to withdraw her fingers, he caught and held them for a minute, until he pulled up in front of her house.

He got out of the cart to walk her to her door, because that’s how Lessie had taught him to treat a woman, and when he walked around, Ellie reached and put her arms around him. She still didn’t talk, just held him there in the sweet smell and clear moonlight of September.

For just a moment, long enough he thought she surely noticed it, he stood stiff in her embrace, and then he returned it, wrapping his arms around her and resting his face against her soft hair.

Nothing would ever have been enough to get him easily through this long hard day, but she offered what comfort she could, and he accepted it and was grateful.

When he went to bed after texting with Zack and Luke, for the first time on this day in those sixteen years he’d mentioned, he remembered—instead of Grace’s death—her life.
