Happy Mother's Day

When your mother is no longer there, Mother's Day holds a certain poignancy.

Even if you, yourself, are a mom, you still miss your own mom. Life is just too short.

Takeaway Truth

Always tell your mother you love her--especially on Mother's Day.

Since tomorrow is Mother's Day, why not serve up a delicious cake for Mom's celebration?

Since this is a busy weekend, let's make a super easy cake like Strawberry Punch Bowl Cake?

Today's recipe for Strawberry Punch Bowl Cake is from Friday Is Cake Day, my cake recipe book. It's available for only 99 cents from Amazon Kindle and other ebook sellers. See all buy links at the end of this post.

Ingredients
  • 1 box of yellow cake mix
  • 12 ounces of heavy cream, whipped
  • 1 large can crushed pineapple in real juice
  • 1 large package of vanilla pudding mix, prepared
  • 1 can strawberry pie filling or 2 cups fresh sliced strawberries
Directions
  • Bake the cake as the package directions require and cook the vanilla pudding mix.
  • Crumble the cake into pieces about an inch square.
  • In a large punchbowl or a pretty large glass bowl of any kind, layer the ingredients in this order: cake pieces, pudding, pineapple, pie filling or fresh strawberries, and whipped cream.
  • Repeat the layers until you’ve used up all the ingredients, finishing with whipped cream on top.
  • You can get extra fancy and place chocolate curls on top of the whipped cream.
  • Chill at least 4 hours and serve. The longer it chills; the better it tastes because all the flavors meld.

Thursday3Some: I Got Your Back, Hailey by June Kramin

Good morning! I'm happy to bring you another book spotlight on Thursday3Some.

Today I'm chatting with a new author friend, June Kramin, author of I Got Your Back, Hailey.

June says, "There is a fine line between genius and crazy... I like to use that line as a jump rope!"

I love that! I surmise that she brings that out of the box imagination to her romance novels. In fact, she confessed that her Super Power is being hopelessly addicted to 80's music. (That's not a bad addiction in my opinion.)

More About June Kramin

June, who prefers to go by Bug, was born in Philadelphia but moved to Maui, Hawaii, when she was four. She met her Prince Charming on Kauai and is currently living Happily Ever After in a small town in Minnesota.

Her son and daughter are her greatest accomplishments. She takes pride in embarrassing them every chance she gets.

I Got Your Back, Hailey

When Hailey stumbles upon a backpack full of money on her nightly jog, she escapes under gunfire with Parker, a man she'd met only moments sooner.

Leaving the security of her secret identity behind, they put together the pieces of Hailey's past and try to put a stop to the man that wants her dead.

Falling in love in the middle of it all was the last thing either one of them expected!

When did you write I Got Your Back, Hailey?

June: I Got You Back, Hailey was published in April 2014, so it was probably written around June of 2013. I remember this story moving very quickly for me. Hailey and Parker had complete control over this one. Things completely fell into place and it was done within 2 months.

By this point, I had parted ways with the last of my 3 publishers. I just wasn't ready to do the query bit again. I abused my 3 beta readers, and they unanimously decided it was their favorite of everything I had written. I found a fabulous editor who helped beat it into shape and voila! A new book was born.

I knew the ins and outs from getting my other books re-released, so I was proud to have this one be my first solo "self-pubbed" novel. I love a good series so that's what I decided to do. Stop with my single titles and concentrate on Hailey and her crew. I'm currently writing number four and enjoying the ride they're taking me on.

What was the spark that gave you the story idea?

This whole series dumbfounds me. One night I was wide awake, and the character name "Parker Peters" came to mind. I know, Spiderman's real name backward. Insane, but one never questions the Muse! I ran with it, and the story unfolded. Even I was unsure if he was the bad guy or the good guy in the beginning. I was thrilled when two characters from another series decided to pop into book 3. Now the series is taking even more twists and turns.

Why do your readers buy I Got Your Back, Hailey?

I Got Your Back, Hailey is more along the lines of what I like to read. There is a romantic element, but it's heavier on the suspense. It was the first book I did a "read and review" for and received phenomenal emails back. I guess I hit a good chord with this one.

Okay, readers. The weekend is coming. I Got Your Back, Hailey sounds like a good book to grab for your leisure reading. Remember, you can find it at: Amazon * B&N * Smashwords.

Review: Bosch, Season 3

If you've read my previous reviews of Bosch, Season 1 and Season 2, you know Darling Hubby and I are big fans of the series made from Michael Connelly's books.

If you aren't Amazon Prime Subscribers, you can watch a recap of Seasons 1 and 2 and a trailer for Season 3, here. Just scroll to the bottom and you'll find those videos.

We're such big fans that I actually marked the date on my calendar when Season 3 would be available. When the big day came, we weren't disappointed. The new season is as captivating as the previous two.

C Is For Captivating, Compelling, and Charismatic

At the end of season 2, Harry Bosch had finally learned who murdered his mother. He thinks he's made peace with the past. However, as season 3 progresses, Harry begins to question what he knows.

With other murders to solve, he's back with a "feeling that he can't let go." Watch the series and you'll agree that the musical theme is spot on for the kind of detective he is. Titus Welliver was born to play Bosch. He is simply superb in the role.

How the Series Is Built

Rather than have each season be one book, each season is an amalgamation of several books. Hubby and I were so captivated by the Bosch character that we started on Connelly's books in order. We're up to book 14 now so we recognize the various books used as source material for the series.

I won't give any spoilers because I think you should watch this police procedural series yourself. There are twists and turns, and all kinds of bad guys--who think they're smarter than a mere cop--to catch. This series is worth the price of becoming an Amazon Prime Subscriber.

Takeaway Truth

Do yourself a favor and watch Bosch. Start at the beginning and watch from Season 1. Have a Bosch Festival. We are on our first available weekend because we want to introduce friends to this outstanding series.

Quote To Deal With Tough Times

I guess I overdid it Monday because today I got very little accomplished. Spent most of the day on the couch dealing with the pain of overdoing. *LOL*

So tonight I'm up, and can't sleep. I realized I didn't get a blog post written so I thought I'd share this quote that I frequently repeat to myself when the going is tough.

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Originally, Friedrich Nietzsche said that in a book in 1888. "That which does not kill us makes us stronger."

Kelly Clarkson took the phrase and made it into a hit song in 2011. Guess truth never dies.

Takeaway Truth

Judging by the last few years, I should be qualified to compete for the title: Strongest Woman on Earth. Here's another truth. It can always be worse.

Conspicuous Absence

I have been conspicuously absent from the scene. I thought I'd let you know why.

I was at my daughter's house the last week in April while her darling hubby was out of town on a business trip. I'm her main helper since she's trying to rehab from being a chronic pain patient.

To make a long story short, I was carrying a tray with cups of hot tea upstairs to her when I tripped over a step (yes, I was really tired) and went flying. Not in a Supergirl kind of way.

I hit my head on a wrought iron spindle and totally messed up left arm, left leg from the knee down, and the right leg.

The good news is that nothing was concussed or broken. The bad news is that my left knee and has been swollen to the size of a grapefruit. Then there's the pain there and in left arm.

Since April 29, I have been able to walk very little. No driving. No computer.

Today I was a little better so I started trying to catch up on some things. I think I'll probably be in the recliner with the laptop for a while yet which is inconvenient but doable. More good news is that I'm getting better every day.

Takeaway Truth

Time heals all wounds--even those caused by exhaustion and dumb accidents.
