When did you write The Bad Wife?
I finished writing The Bad Wife eighteen months ago. But it’s been living in my head a lot longer.
What was the spark that gave you the story idea?
The book is the fourth romantic mystery in the Kim Reynolds Mystery Series. Although each novel in the series is a separate murder mystery, the lives of the main characters continue. So each novel is dynamic not static, just like the lives of real people.
To be honest, the main characters, Kim, Mike Gardner, Bert St. Croix, are very real to me. I try to give the novels an added dimension. For example, in The Bad Wife, there’s an underlying feminist theme. The novel is about women in today’s society, their strengths and their vulnerabilities.
When Sara Paretsky wrote “Kim Reynolds is a thought-provoking character,” I felt really good. But first and foremost, the novel is meant to be entertaining and interesting to readers, male and female alike. I would like readers to finish the novel with a sense of enjoyment and satisfaction. That is my intent.
Why do readers buy The Bad Wife?
Some may have read the previous Kim Reynolds mysteries and enjoyed them. They may especially want to know what happens next in the lives of the main characters. But some will pick up the series for the first time because the cover art grabbed them or the book has good reviews. Others might think the mystery in itself is interesting. It’s fast-faced and has elements of a suspense thriller as it gathers force.
