Saturday Share: Mom's Meat Loaf

Mom's Meat Loaf cooks perfectly every time.

You can use lean ground beef if you don't want the fat of other types plus adding oatmeal gives it some healthy fiber.

It's easy to throw together to bake in your slow cooker.

By the way, the brand name of my slow cooker is Crock-Pot®. Yours may be a different brand. If I say Crock-Pot®, take it to mean a slow cooker.

I depend on my Crock-Pot and my Instant Pot when I have more things to do than time in which to do them.

It's one way I always have dinner ready to serve. Chances are you may already have the ingredients. Mix it up now, place it in your slow cooker, and have meat loaf tonight.

Mom's Meat Loaf
  • 2 pounds of ground beef (a 90/10 fat ratio is what I use)
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 2/3 cup quick cooking non-flavored raw oatmeal
  • 1 package dry onion or mushroom-onion soup mix
  • 1/2 cup ketchup (reserve 2 tablespoons for spreading on top)
  • Optional: seasoning herbs (for Italian flavor, add 1/2 teaspoon Italian herbs or oregano; for Tex-Mex flavoring, add 1/2 teaspoon cumin and 1/2 teaspoon chili powder)
Directions
  • Spray interior of Crock-Pot with Pam® or a similar non-stick spray.
  • Combine ground beef, eggs, oatmeal, soup mix, herbs if desired, and ketchup (except for 2 tablespoons).
  • Mix well.
  • Shape into a loaf.
  • Using a spatula, lift the loaf and place in the Crock-Pot.
  • Spread the remaining 2 tbsp. of ketchup over the top.
  • Cover and bake on low 8-10 hours or on high for 4-6 hours.
When you remove the meat loaf from the slow cooker, you can pour the drippings off and use to make a gravy.

Add some mashed potatoes, a green veggie and/or a tossed salad, some crusty French bread, and you'll have a great meal to serve the family.

Takeaway Truth

If you're a busy woman, a slow cooker makes good dinners possible every day.

BookBrush Adds More Features

Of all the websites to which I subscribe, there are only a couple that I consider crucial to marketing success.

One of these is BookBrush, the most user-friendly graphics website for authors that I've ever found.

BookBrush, which began life in 2018 as Covers Sell Books, has made one enhancement after another. So you can see some of the graphics you can create with the web-based design features, I'm illustrating this post with some I've made using BookBrush.

I blogged about BookBrush when I was first introduced to their author services.

I blogged again when they changed their name to BookBrush and added an image upload feature that allows users to add multiple book covers rather than upload each time you visit the site.

Since my last post, they've added some amazing tools for authors like new templates, Instant Mockups, Community Templates, and Video Creator.

All of this makes the website perfect for anyone who wants DIY graphics for marketing but also wants those graphics to look as if a professional graphic artist created them.

Label a Reissue or Not

Here's a quandary that faces authors who want to republish a book for whatever reason.

Should you indicate on the cover that the book is a Reissue?

Many authors want to label a book as a reissue if they've significantly edited a book that has been up for sale for a length of time.

Generally speaking, denoting the book as a reissue indicates there were problems with the previous publication.

Let's look at some reasons for and against putting Reissue on a book cover and in the description.

For

The main reason authors want to do this is if they've given the book a complete overhaul, not just corrected a few typos.

Authors want to let readers know by labeling the book as a reissue that any problems with the book have been corrected. All authors should know that those who have purchased the older version of the book can sync their Kindle to get the updated version IF they have Automatic Book Updates turned on. More on this below.

Another "for" is that if a book is labeled reissued, a reader who already purchased it probably won't
buy it again.

Many voracious readers consume ebooks by the dozen every week. They may not remember that they already purchased your ebook.

If your reissue doesn't have the same ASIN, then it won't show the reader that they bought the book already.

The result is that irritated reader will ask for a refund, and irritating readers is a great way to make sure they don't buy your books again.

The solution is easy. Even if you want to label your book as a reissue, just don't unpublish or delete the current flawed version and upload a new file so it will have the same ASIN.

Turning On Automatic Book Updates

The easy way for a purchaser to get the newest version of an ebook is to go to the Amazon page, Manage Your Content and Devices where all your purchases and devices are listed.

On that pages menu, click the Preferences tab. Scroll down until you find Automatic Book Updates. Click it to make sure the button is turned on. Once turned on,  any updates to an ebook previously purchased will automatically download to your Kindle the next time you sync it. Easy peasy.

If you don't want to turn Automatic Book Update on, you can update manually by scrolling through your purchases and look for the Update Available button on the right side. Click it and you replace the original book with the new version.

Many read ebooks on their cell phones. A new ebook version can be updated there too. Rather than tell you how, I'll send you to a website that explains How to Update Kindle Books on Your iPhone.

Against

The biggest problem with labeling a book cover as a Reissue is that it may create a problem with Amazon.

A reader who already has the book but reads on a device other than a Kindle may ask for a refund from Amazon so they can get the reissued book because they may think there's extra content added.

If a lot of readers do that, Amazon might send an email to all buyers and tell them they can return the older book for a full refund.

Guess where that money comes from? Your royalty account of course.

What To Do?

To avoid problems with Readers, as I said above, upload the new file to the book listing, keeping the same ASIN so readers will see immediately that they already bought the book.

If you feel it necessary—entirely optional—to indicate to the world that the book has been altered, do not label it as a revision because that's not really what it is.

It's a new edition. So to avoid problems with Amazon, properly label a new version of a book as the Edition number. You've seen this on print books.

Take a well-known print book and look at the Copyright page. Usually the last sentence of the Copyright notice says something like this: "First Edition." Or it might say "Second Edition" or whatever number edition it may be.

Takeaway Truth

This may seem nitpicky, but self-published indie authors must address issues like this so they know and adhere to publishing protocols.

3 Ways to Increase Blog Traffic

Increasing the traffic to your blog will also increase your name/brand recognition.

Here are 3 tips that are actually based in courtesy and generosity. Use them to help you bring more visitors to your blog.

1. Comments: Making and Receiving

Visit other blogs often and leave comments. You'll find a treasure trove of great blogs on the internet. Visit around and meet some of interesting people. When you read something that resonates with you, leave a comment. Be sure your comment is relevant to the post and not a plug for your books.

If someone leaves a comment on your blog post, acknowledge it and thank them. Check the person's blogger profile and return the favor by visiting his/her blog. Explore the blog. Be sure to leave a comment for them.

2. Use Links Wisely

There are 2 kinds of links: external and internal. Always make sure you use relevant keywords to anchor a link.

External links take your reader to another website. Always set up those links so they open the new site in a new tab. If the link opens in a new tab, you don't lose them when they click the link.

An external link is like citing a source in the bibliography of a written paper. It's a way to help your reader find out more information about the topic of your post. For instance, if you talk about an article you read, an upcoming event, a book you reviewed, music, or other product, it's helpful to link to that specific webpage so your reader doesn't have to hunt online for it.

In fact, if it's something of interest to your blog audience, readers can get irritated if you mention it and don't give a link.

Benefits of External Links
  • gives you credibility by linking to well-established websites
  • builds relationships with other websites and expands your own reach
  • shows you're generous to others and helpful to your readers
Internal links take the reader to somewhere else on your own site.

Using internal links is a way to point your reader to other relevant posts about the subject of the post they're currently reading. It opens your archives so your readers don't have to hunt for previous posts you may mention.

Internal links can boost your SEO (Search Engine Optimization). When outside websites link to your blog, i.e., they post an external link to your content, Google "sees" your website as more valuable. Thus, your website will appear higher in SERP (Search Engine Result Pages).

With relevant internal links, readers will spend more time on your site so your bounce rate decreases and your brand/name recognition factor increases.

Just make sure that an internal link is relevant, logical, and of value if a reader follows it.

3. Be Generous to Blog Visitors

Always have something to offer website visitors—something to make it worth their time to visit your site regularly. Excellent content is a given, but consider offering something free every now and then.

The internet was built on the expectation that everything was free. Many still have that mindset so be willing to give away something.

Examples could be products, first chapter excerpts, tips of some sort, books, or downloads of files that could benefit them in some way..

Takeaway Truth

Be friendly and generous. Be smart. You'll find you enjoy blogging and you'll increase your blog traffic.

5 Ways to Feel Better Now

If you look for any advice on being happy, you'll find virtually the same thing from source after source.

"It isn’t what you have or who you are or where you are or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about it." – Dale Carnegie

Yet we all end up thinking, "If only I had a better job..." or "If only I had a bigger house..." or "If only I could lose 20 pounds..."

Focusing on what you perceive as lacking is a recipe for unhappiness. Better to ask yourself why not having the perfect job or a new car or a cruise vacation makes you so unhappy.

1. Focus on what you have, not what you lack.

Really, think about it. Do you have enough to eat? Do you have people who love you?

2. Appreciate what you do have.

Do you have a place to live? Thousands are homeless. Do you have a job? Many are unemployed. Every day think about all you have even though that may not be perfect.

3. Keep an appreciation journal.

Every day write about something that you are grateful to have in your life.

4. Write this affirmation 10 times every morning and evening—preferably in your appreciation journal.

I'm paraphrasing a quotation from Mary Engelbreit: "If I don't like something, I change it; if I can't change it, I change the way I think about it." Do this for 1 month and see if your attitude changed.

5. If you're miserable because your life isn't perfect, go for a walk right now.

Often, bad moods and thoughts can be chased away by getting some exercise which increases blood flow, thus more oxygen for your brain, and causes the brain to release endorphins, those feel-good hormones.

Takeaway Truth

Life doesn't have to be perfect to be wonderful.

Review: Mindhunter

If you want to watch something intelligent, well-acted and directed, tune in to Mindhunter.

Season 2 of this Netflix original dropped last week, and it's, well, compelling, creepy, captivating, horrifying, and just as riveting as a train wreck you can't help but watch.

Mindhunter, the Netflix series, is based on the book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker, first published in 1998.

I read the book when it first came out, and it scared me because of how easily sexual psychopaths caught and killed their prey.

Make no mistake, people were prey to the serial killers discussed in the book and now in the Netflix series.

A Little Factual Background

To answer your question, "Is this a true story?" in advance, here's a little history.

In 1972, the FBI established the Behavioral Science Unit in response to the rising wave of sexual assault and homicide.

In 1976, Supervisory Special Agents John Douglas and Robert Ressler, members of the Behavioral Science Unit, began compiling a centralized database of serial offenders. They did this by travel across the U.S. and visiting prisons to interview incarcerated serial predators.

Mindhunter, the Netflix series, is faithful, for the most part, in telling Douglas and Ressler's story of
obtaining information and classifying it by:

* Motives
* Planning and preparation
* Details of the crimes
* Disposal of evidence (bodies, murder weapons, etc.)

After interviewing 36 incarcerated serial predators, they completed their database, and FBI profilers began working in the field and providing consultations to police on active cases.

If you're a crime fiction reader, you probably know that the Behavioral Science Unit (BSU) no longer exists within the FBI.

It was folded into the Critical Incident Response Group (CIRG) and renamed the Behavioral Research and Instruction Unit (BRIU). Now it's called the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU-5) and is part of the National Center for Analysis of Violent Crime (NCAVC).

BAU-5 works on developing research and using evidence-based results to provide training and improve consultation in the behavioral sciences—understanding who criminals are, how they think, why they do what they do—for the FBI and law enforcement communities.

It's All Mostly Real

Douglas and Ressler are portrayed by Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany who seem made for these roles of dedicated agents. Anna Torv is Dr. Wendy Carr, a psychologist who specializes in deviant behavior. As always this Australian actress is perfect. The time is the 1970's.

They struggle to get inside a killer's mind and figure out how he thinks so they can catch him or, if he's already incarcerated, figure out how to identify these individuals in the hope of getting them early in their "killing career."

FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench (characters taking the place of Douglas and Ressler) have their own problems which are highly fictionalize and dramatized in the Netflix series. What is true are the cunning psychopaths. The actors are chilling in their portrayal of killers from Richard Speck to Charles Manson to Ed Kemper.

The crimes as told in the series are factual. If you want the unmitigated truth, get Mindhunter, the book.

What's Totally Wrong in the Show

There was a glaring mistake in the show. I can't believe the show's writers didn't fact check better. They called serial murderer Dean Corll of Pasadena, a suburb of Houston, Texas, the Candy Man.

Wrong! And it's wrong on the Dean Corll Wikipedia page too.

The Candy Man was Ronald Clark O'Bryan, also nicknamed The Man Who Killed Halloween. He's the reason parents began checking the Trick or Treat candies received on Halloween.

O'Bryan lived in Deer Park, another Houston suburb. In 1974, he gave cyanide-laced Pixy Stix to his own children and some neighbor children. His young son ate the candy and died. O'Bryan did it to collect on a life insurance policy.

The other children with the poison-laced candy in their treat collections didn't eat the Pixy Stix. O'Bryan was tried, found guilty, sentenced to death, and executed in 1984.

Dean Arnold Corll was a monster who, with his teen recruits Elmer Wayne Henley and David Owen Brooks, abducted, raped, tortured, and murdered at least 28 teenage boys and young men between 1970 and 1973 in the Houston area. The agents in the film interview Elmer Wayne Henley.

Takeaway Truth

Riveting stories, great acting, and subject matter that's compelling even as it's stomach-turning—that's Mindhunter. It will creep you out far more than the fictional TV series Criminal Minds.

5 Online Tips for Authors

I believe you should never reinvent the wheel.

Here are 4 tips about easy ways to do things are required of you nearly every day. This will certainly aid you immediately in your online marketing.

1. Create a document with all your book titles, a short blurb for each, and the corresponding buy links for every channel where it's sold.

This document will save you so much time. You can access the document any time you need to fill out a website form or paste it into a blog post or wherever you may need it.

Create the document in an easy to access text document (Notepad) or Flashnote file, which is always plain text so you can just copy the link and paste it whenever you need it.

If you make this document in Word, save it as a text file so it doesn't create extraneous HTML code that can really mess up a blog post if you paste it into a blog without "cleaning it up."

2. Always paste from a text file rather than a Word file.

When filling out web forms, pasting content from a Word file can end up looking weird and/or have random odd characters appear.

3. Always proofread any online form you fill out—especially if you pasted text in.

Some web forms just won't accept pasted text cleanly. You may end up with random characters or symbols.

4. If you want to try to shorten a link so that you can track the number of clicks, use any of the popular link shortening services like Goo.gl, TinyURL, Bitly, Smart URL.

If you really want to see who's clicking your buy link, track the clicks. All the link shortening services work basically the same, but each has some pros and cons. Use the one that's easiest for you.

5. For books on Amazon, use Booklinker which creates one link that works in every Kindle book shop.

Booklinker is easy to use. Just create an account and create links for your book. It's so easy. You can personalize the link and also make the beginning part of it say: "get book" or "my book."

Remember, Booklinker is part of the Amazon world so it works only to create links for Amazon stores.

Of course, you can upgrade Booklinker to GeniusLink, but then it goes from free to paid. Once you upgrade, you can't go back to the free level.

By the way, Booklinker won't create a link from a URL that contains referral code so be sure you clean up the URL before using Booklinker.

(See my post Create a Clean Amazon URL Link.)

Booklinker does not currently support the shortened "amzn.to" format.

Takeaway Truth

There's always an easy way to shortcut the process. When you find a shortcut, share it with others.

Back to School Safety Tips

Back to school, the time most kids dread, has arrived. There's less than a month before autumn arrives and leaves begin to fall.

I think it's time for a few reminders for those of us who are NOT in school.

Back to School Safety Tips

1. Never speed through a school zone.

Kids are unpredictable and prone to impulsiveness. School zone speeds are low because of that. Reduce your speed. It's only for a few minutes.

2. Never use your cell phone in a school zone.

In Texas, and many other states, it's illegal to use a cell phone in a school zone.

Take your eyes off the street to glance at your cell and you might maim or kill a child who impulsively decided to dash across the street in front of you.

The few seconds your eyes were on your cell instead of the street can be a matter of life and death.

3. Make time in your day to actually talk to each of your children about their school day.

Sounds simple, but many people let their kids live separate lives inside the home.

Be interested in what your kids do at school, what they think, and how their school life is going. Engage in a conversation and focus entirely on your kid. Act as if he or she is the most important person in the world.

4. Take away the kids' cell phones at a designated time each evening.

Help your child to succeed by having all cell phones placed in a central docking station at a designated time each evening. A kid with access to a cell phone when adults have gone to bed is a kid that will play on the phone rather than sleeping.

5. Turn off the WiFi at night.

Same reason as #4. The lure of the cell phone and/or internet is huge. Kids are usually addicted to their devices. Help them break the habit.

Takeaway Truth

Just as you're trying to set limits for your kids, set limits for yourself too. Unplug from media when you're home, and communicate one on one with your kids.
