Meet New Yorker Mageela Troche

This morning I have my mug of coffee, and I'm visiting with a new author who has a very interesting background. Please welcome Mageela Troche to SlingWords.

About Mageela Troche

An Air Force brat, Mageela Troche landed in New York City and wanted to leave the same day she arrived. Yet, with her stubbornness, she learned to like the place, and the libraries were the main reason. When she learned to read and write, she decided to be an author and an actress. Once in college, she changed her life plan in the pursuit of money. After all, college loans must be repaid. Mageela writes in the cramped corner of her Big Apple apartment with her lovebird perched on her shoulder.

1. In which genre do you write, and why that particular genre?

I write historical romance focusing on Scotland. I love researching and learning new tidbits and it is the only way to time travel.

2. What's your most recent book and what's it about?

Claiming the Highlander, a historical romance.

First came marriage…will love come next? Caelen MacKenzie married heiress Lady Brenna Grant in his youth for a large parcel of land and an earldom. From the rugged western highlands to the glittering Scottish court, they must battle the machinations of powerful men scheming against them.

3. As an author, what can readers expect when they read one of your books?

Stories about families, some snarkiness, adventure, danger and sex. I love writing sex scenes. I guess it was all those years I read Cosmo.

4. How did you "become" an author? For instance, was there a moment when you said: "I think I'll write a book."

As an Air Force brat, I moved around every two years, and I met so many different people. I always wondered about people’s lives—their happiness and hardships and what made them the people they were. About ten years ago, the plans I had for my life changed, and I found solace in reading. Then I decided to write a book. No one will ever see that one, but it showed me that I could write a novel.

5. What's the best thing about being an author?

For me it’s telling stories. I love creating these worlds and places. It’s daydreaming and therapy for the adult.

6. What's the worst thing about being an author?

Oh, Lord! The worst thing is writer’s block when you’re on a deadline. I learned to relax and let the ideas come. Stress will always make everything, especially creativity, difficult.

7. Do you have editions of your books available other than ebook editions?

Yes, my first two titles, The Marriage Alliance and The Laird’s Right are available in print, and my third novel, Claiming the Highlander, should be released in print soon.

8. Do you listen to audio books? If so, what device do you use?

I don’t listen to audio books. I tried one particular title, but I couldn’t stand the narrator’s voice and haven’t tried another one since.

9. What device do you use to read ebooks?

I have both a Kindle and a Nook. Lately, though I’ve been using my kindle. It’s so great being able to have hundreds of book not cramming my home.

10. If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring author, what would it be?

Never stop writing and putting your work out there. It will help you grow as a writer and as a person. You learn to deal with criticism, both good and bad, and get a better understanding of yourself.

11. If you could tell readers one thing, what would it be?

I feel like readers already know, this but I would like readers to just let the story unfold. I hear other readers saying, “I thought it was going to be different.” Or other stuff along those lines. I’m the type of reader that never tries to figure out who the murderer is or what will happen next. I just enjoy the ride and wherever it takes me like a written rollercoaster.

12. What is your big dream (or goal) as a writer?

My goal is to make a living as a writer. I’d love for readers to have me on their "gotta-buy" list. I’d like to be a bestseller.

  1. Great interview :) Not sure about making New York home, I'm from a small little country town :) I'd find all that traffic overwhelming
    Good luck with your books

  2. Thanks for commenting, Jacquie. Yes, I find the idea of living in NY a bit overwhelming although Houston, where I hang my hat, is intimidating to many as well. I think it's the weather that would deter me. So hats off to Mageela!
