I've heard it in old movies and wondered how Disney's Jiminy Cricket became Jiminy Christmas.
It's actually a direct reference to Jesus Christ and dates all the way back to 1664.
That's when someone recorded the Latin phrase Jesu domini as Gemini, pronounced as people say Jiminy Cricket.
Yes, many Americans pronounce Geminii as GEM-UH-NIGH. All that aside, I'm pretty sure Walt Disney named the famous cricket based on that phrase.
