How To Succeed In Self-Employment

Question: What do you think is required for success when one is self-employed?

Answer: A lot of things, but there's one crucial element that may be more important than any of the others and that is Self-Motivation.

In any self-employment endeavor, from writing to operating a home-based photography studio or accounting business, one must be self-motivated to succeed.

The work is often solitary and arduous. Most self-employed people work longer hours than if they were employed by a company, and it may take a long time to turn a profit.

A Choice Or No Option?

So why does someone choose this route? Sometimes it's because a person has no choice. Maybe he lost his job and can't find another one. Those with marketable skills may become self-employed because they have no other option, but I think the vast majority of those who are self-employed choose this path because they dream of being independent.

With a career as an employee of a company, someone is there to direct your work. You put in eight hours and get a paycheck at regular intervals.

With self-employment, there's no one to tell you what to do, and there's very little net income--no paycheck.

If you work effectively and damned hard, that may change. The thing is, you have to put in consistent, persistent effort, day after day.

You probably know what must be done, and you're the only one to do it. That requires commitment and motivation.

Takeaway Truth

To succeed in self-employment, your motivation must won't come from within.
