As soon as I told someone I was "as busy as a bee" I wondered what the origin of that expression is.
To my surprise there was a definitive source.
It's from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, (the Squire's Tale), circa 1386-1400.
the squire's taleEy! Goddes mercy!” sayd our Hoste tho,
Now such a wyf I pray God keep me fro.
Lo, suche sleightes and subtilitees
In wommen be; for ay as busy as bees
Takeaway Truth
