Review: Another Life

What can I say about Another Life?

Let's start with another question.

If you're a writer, you know how you can put your heart and soul into a book, and it has all the elements of a great book?

But, sometimes all those wonderful elements just don't come together?

That's what I'll say about Another Life.

This Netflix orginal series has some of the most talented actors including some of my favorites like Katee Sackhoff and Selma Blair.

About Another Life

Astronaut Niko Breckenridge and her young crew face unimaginable danger as they go on a high-risk mission to explore the genesis of an alien artifact.

The story line is not original, but this wouldn't be a problem if the characterization was better. I rarely write bad reviews because I figure if I can't say something positive then it's best to not say anything at all. However, the characters in this series were so, well, stupid, that it really got to me.

We're told that the equivalent of "the best and the brightest" are sent on this space mission yet every single character is unable to manage his/her emotions, confront challenges intelligently, and solve problems. In fact, they all act more like spoiled children than adults out to save the world.

If Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin and all of the other real astronauts had behaved the way this crew did, they'd never have reached the moon. In fact, they'd have killed each other before they left earth orbit.

The scientists left behind on Earth who attempt to figure out what the artifact is, where it came from, etc. are equally obtuse. They commit every cliché of bad judgment that's in far too many science fiction movies. They are the science fiction equivalent of the dumb teen girl that goes into the dark basement where the monster hides. Can you say Too Stupid To Live?

TSTL

That pretty much describes every single character! I was so disappointed. Katee Sackhoff is such a good actress. Why didn't they—whoever they are—respect her talent and give her a damned good script?

I gave up after the first episode. The only thing that interested me was about the artifact/space ship so I fast forwarded the last episode to see if it was anything fascinating. It was in effect the same as presented in many sci fi movies. No surprises.

I won't tell you what happened in case you find the series interesting and fascinating. I'm tired of sloppy writing in TV and movies that show color by number plots and cardboard cutout characters.

Takeaway Truth

I have to give this a thumbs down and hope Ms. Sackhoff and Ms. Blair get offered something more worthy of their talent.

Oh, My Aching Back

Image by Wolfgang Claussen - Pixabay
I have not blogged since July 23. OMG! Did you wonder if I died?

Well, I didn't, but I have felt incredibly bad. My long car trip killed my already aching back.

I've visited my friendly chiropractor who took lovely x-rays of my spine. You know how it's supposed to be lined up one vertebra after the other?

Well, mine isn't. I have 3 areas with 2 vertebra misaligned, that would be cervical, thoracic, and lumbar areas.

My back problems were caused by injuries sustained in an accident in November of 2017. I didn't get treated at the time. Now, I'm forced to take a month off to do so.

I'm instructed to stay away from the computer. As if that were possible. So I bargained with my husband about it. I said I would limit my time to 30 minutes on and then hours off.

Oops. I have already done more than that, and I can feel the strain.

Darling Hubby is trying to get my Dragon dictation software to work after a Windows update a while back killed it. If not, I'll use the Windows Voice Recognition software once I've read the 16 pages of instructions. Sheesh!

I'll give you a report tomorrow if I can sneak to the computer.

Takeaway Truth

I'm always telling people to take care of themselves. I guess it's a case of, "Do as I say; not as I do."

Love Knows No Age Limits

Today's topic? Love and age.

Have you noticed that most romance novels are peopled by the young and beautiful?

Traditionally-published novels usually starred those under thirty-five.

In fact, an editor once said to an author: “Make your heroine twenty-three years old and the CEO of a company.”

I swear that is the absolute truth. I don’t know about you, but I don’t know too many 23-year-old CEOs. Do you?

The point is that traditional publishing had this idea that readers were all in their 20's, and they didn’t want to read about anybody much older than they were.

If you're looking for a reason why authors happily deserted traditional publishers and embraced indie authorship, there it is.

Forever Young

We indie authors write books about people in their 30's, 40's, 50's, and even older finding lasting love.

Still, the idea of romance and sex being for those below forty holds sway. Of course, we indie authors write heroines younger than our own age, but we do it by choice not because it's the only thing we can write.

I love writing about two people who find each other in life. There’s romance and sex and passion and, in the end, commitment. But, I also love having a secondary love relationship in my books too.

The secondary relationship in several are between what we euphemistically call senior citizens.

In Still The One, the main love story is between Burke and Ally.

Burke’s grandfather and Ally’s grandmother were scheming matchmakers who were also in love and having an affair after meeting on a cruise ship.

Yes, they talked about sex! Oh, horrors.

Seventy-something people talking sexily. What’s the world coming to?

In The Trouble With Love, Deputy Susannah Quinn and Special Agent Hogan are the main love story.

They're trying to catch a thief, recover stolen jewels, and avoid falling in love!

But I get more comments and email about Susannah’s mom Tory and Hogan’s Uncle Walter.

These two middle-aged people fell hard and fast for each other–in lust and in love. Against their better judgment, they leap into a relationship and have no regrets.

In Old Enough to Know Better, Stormy is an older woman.

Her soul mate just happens to be a younger man, Sean Butler.

Sean has all he can do to woo Stormy who obstinately refuses to become involved with him—even though she’s half in love with him anyway.

In the end, he prevails. I don’t want to spoil the ending in case you haven’t read this book, but he gives her a pendant with an engraving that sums up Stormy’s attitude about finding love.

Love at any age is amazing, intense, breathtaking, and wonderful. When you’re older, that’s still true—sometimes all those feelings are magnified.

In “The Man in Lower Ten,” Mary Roberts Rinehart wrote: “Love is like the measles. The older you get, the worse the attack.”

Takeaway Truth

No matter your age, I wish you the kind of love I write about in my romance novels!

Fredericksburg, Wine & Austin Singer Bruce Smith

I haven't had a chance to report on my wine (writing research) journey through Fredericksburg, Texas.

In one word? Fantastic.

We tasted "sunshine in a glass" at several wineries in the scenic hills of Fredericksburg.

We ended our first day at Pedernales Cellars. After the tasting, we decided to sit on the patio beneath the shade of a large live oak tree.

We lucked out. Bruce Smith of Austin was entertaining that afternoon. Because of his music, he earned four new fans. You can find him on YouTube. Here's a video of 30 Days, one of the songs on his latest CD, 'Til the Wheels Fall Off.

We're always very appreciative of musicians and singers—especially those who write their own lyrics and music. We thoroughly enjoyed the impromptu concert and applauded loudly.

When he finished his set, he came over to us and gave me a copy of his latest CD, 'Til the Wheels Fall Off. Once we were in the car headed to the hotel, I ripped open the CD and put it in the player.

Thanks again, Bruce! We've really enjoyed it.

You can buy the track for 30 Days, or the entire album on the website.

Photo Spotlight: Sangre de Cristo Sunsets

Recent Snow on Sangre de Cristo by Johnny Ainsworth©2019
We returned from our Colorado trip to visit my brother Monday night.

He lives in a solar home at an elevation of 8,600+ feet. His main solar panels are huge, and he has small individual ones on various pieces of equipment.

The battery storage array is impressive.

He loves it in southern Colorado where he can stand on his deck and look across the valley to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

The peaks on those mountains are 13,000 to 14,000+ feet—higher than the better known Pikes Peak. Around mid-June, he called to say he was standing on his deck and watching it snow on the mountains. He took the picture above and texted it to me.

Origin of the Name

In 1719 the Spanish explorer Antonio Valverde y Cosio named the mountain range Sangre de Cristo, meaning "Blood of Christ" because of the reddish hue of the snow-covered peaks at sunrise, called alpenglow. The red hue is even more prominent at sunset.

To see the names of the various peaks—all of which the locals can tell you—click here.

Sangre de Cristo Winter Sunset by Johnny Ainsworth©2017
The winter sunsets are just as impressive as seen in this photo taken a couple of winters ago.

We spent several evenings on the deck, doing nothing but watching the sun set behind the mountains.

As the sun sank below the moutain range, it colored the peaks a brilliant red and streaked the sky with bands of turquoise and pink and gold.

Absolutely beautiful.

Sangre de Cristo, July Sunset by Johnny Ainsworth©2019
Takeaway Truth

If you have a chance to go to southern Colorado, don't hesitate.

It's peaceful and beautiful, and you won't see better sunrises and sunsets anywhere.

It's the perfect place to let your imagination roam free, and that's something we authors need.

Surprise! It's Patrice Wilton & Traci Hall

Two of my favorite authors are Patrice Wilton and Traci Hall.

Writing together they are the new author known as Traci Wilton. That's right! To my delight, they have joined together to write a charming amateur sleuth mystery series, the Salem B&B Mysteries, under their joint pen name.

Published by Kensington, the first book of their series is Mrs. Morris and the Ghost.

The mystery can be purchased now in either ebook or paperbook editions on pre-release.

The book publishes July 30 so if you get the ebook, it will be sent to you at midnight on the publishing date. If you prefer paperback, buy on pre-release, and it will be mailed to you when it publishes.

About Mrs. Morris and the Ghost

A grieving young widow, Charlene needed a new start—so she bought a historic mansion, sight unseen, and drove from Chicago to New England to start turning it into a bed-and-breakfast.

On her first night in the house, she awakens to find a handsome man with startling blue eyes in her bedroom. Terror turns to utter disbelief when he politely introduces himself as Jack Strathmore—and explains that he used to live here—when he was alive.

He firmly believes that someone pushed him down the stairs three years ago, and he won’t be able to leave until someone figures out who.

If Charlene wants to get her business up and running in time for the Halloween tourist rush, and get this haunting houseguest out of the way, she’ll have to investigate. Though truth be told, this ghost is starting to grow on her.

Entertaining Facts About Colorado

Today is another traveling day as we're leaving Colorado for home.

I've logged more hours in a car than I care to think about, but Texas is far into the distance.

We had a great visit with my brother and his wife at their home in the wilderness—over 8,500 feet elevation.

I'm glad to be heading home though. The mountains are a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live where I have to wear a jacket in the summer. *G*

I learned a lot about Colorado, the Centennial State, so I'm sharing them with you! Aren't you lucky?

* The world's largest flat-top mountain is in Grand Mesa.

* Mike the Headless Chicken Day is celebrated in Fruita because L. A. Olsen, a local farmer, cut off Mike's head on September 10, 1945, for a chicken dinner, but Mike didn't die. Indeed, he lived for another 4 years without a head. (Zombie chicken anyone?)
All kinds of facts are useful to writers

* Louis Ballast of Denver is said to have invented the cheeseburger and received a trademark for the name Cheeseburger in 1935.

* The highest paved road in North America is the road to Mt. Evans which exits off I-70 from Idaho Springs and then climbs to an altitude of 14,258 feet above sea level.

* Colorado means "colored red." The red marble called Beulah Red was used in building the Colorado State Capitol. Cutting, polishing, and installing the marble in the Capitol building took 6 years, from 1894 to 1900. Coincidentally, all of the Beulah Red marble in the world went into the building. (Is that true?)

* The United States federal government owns more than 1/3 of the land in Colorado.

* Colfax Avenue in Denver is the longest continuous street in America.

* Inspired by the view from Pike's Peak, Katherine Lee Bates wrote "America the Beautiful."

* Pueblo is the only city in America with four living recipients of the Medal of Honor.

* The 13th step of the state capital building in Denver is exactly 1 mile high above sea level.

* The tallest sand dune in America is in Great Sand Dunes National Monument near Alamosa. The weird 46,000 acres have 700-foot sand peaks created more than a million years ago by ocean water and wind.

* The highest suspension bridge in the world is over the Royal Gorge near Canon City. The Royal Gorge Bridge spans the Arkansas River at a height of 1,053 feet.

* Fort Garland, Colorado's first and oldest military post, was established in 1858 and commanded by the legendary frontiersman Kit Carson.

* On November 8, 1887, John Henry Holliday, better known as Doc Holliday, died from tuberculosis at the Hotel Glenwood in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

Review: Shooter, The Series

Normally, I give positive reviews about movies and TV series I watch.

So I'll try to find something positive to say about Shooter, a USA Network drama series.

Based on the 2007 film of the same name which was based on the Stephen Hunter novel Point of Impact, I'll be kind and say it just didn't come together as a tightly plotted, compelling action thriller.

(Movie Photo By Source (WP:NFCC#4), Fair use, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?curid=49580688)

Shooter, the series, ran for 3 seasons. I understand it was canceled midway through the third season airing. It was recently added to Netflix. Darling Hubby is a Stephen Hunter fan and has read several of the Bob Lee Swagger books. We both liked the taut action thriller starring Mark Wahlberg as Swagger.

I can only say I was surprised it lasted 3 seasons. Ryan Phillippe is a good actor, and the rest of the noteworthy cast were excellent too, but the series just didn't represent the character as created by Hunter and brought to life by Wahlberg in the movie version.

Despite the graphic, it's not a must-watch.
There were so many contrivances to advance the story in the direction they wanted, and the character of Swagger seemed to have no situational awareness at all.

Neither did the FBI agents and Secret Service, etc. Unbelievable how many times characters were shot, ambushed, etc. because they didn't bother to even look around.

In reality, a character like Swagger in real life would be just this side of paranoid. He'd be more like the Swagger portrayed by Wahlberg.

Hubby and I were disappointed that such talented actors were either directed poorly or stuck with a subpar screenplay.

Takeaway Truth

Of course, in the television and movie industry, there are often "so many cooks in the kitchen that it tends to spoil the broth" so to speak.

Maybe it's like a book. Sometimes you put everything into it, but it just doesn't come together.
